Particle a new start up shop which produce several tiny applications, has released a brand new and massively tiny application called Robo.to.
The application did not look too convincing or to be taken too seriously initially, but as more research was put into the it, the GIF-esque Flash avatar which was present on the home page slowly unraveled little delights. The application had been created for users to enjoy what they were doing while social networking while not having to think too much about it. So in short the application was created to simplify processes and create user friendly technology served on a platter!
The flashy avatar that appears on the front page contains a badge that appears in a narrow, mobile-friendly form and links to a page with any pointers one can choose to direct visitors to other online homes. This application also helps you record videos which you can post on Facebook, Twitter and all the other networking sites, the only hitch here being the vidoes are soundless.Considering it’s a tiny application and is fresh into the market is has been found to be delightful making it very simple for users to make use of it.
Just like any new application, once released ,it has to compete with all the bigger sharks in the ocean(namely Facebook and Twitter) if it has to survive. Even though it has user friendly technology and has simplified step wise links and also seems like glittery eye candy, the question of revenue comes into play. Primarily not many users are aware of the tiny applications like Robo.to and moreover if all they get to record are soundless videos they might not want to come back. Moreover the software does not have any distinctive features that make it more desirable than the other bigger products and users may not even remember it! And finally with upcoming new softwares that users would rather log into the newer tiny applications usually get demolished due to lack of revenue.
All these facts considered Robo.to seems an interestingly delightful application today in the market, but the question of its survival can only be defined with time.
Fujifilm is the world’s largest photographic and imaging company which brings continuous innovation and leading-edge products to a broad spectrum of industries, including electronic imaging, photofinishing equipment, medical systems, life sciences etc. Now Fujifilm is talking the digital camera technology to the next level by offering a 3D digital camera model.
The principle is simple; it uses two lenses whose images are merged into a single 3D picture or movie. You can view three dimensional images without wearing special 3D spectacles. As the camera performs a series of image processing steps automatically, you can take 3D stills and videos with the high quality picture by just pointing the camera and hitting the shutter button.
You can adjust the camera settings to go well with the scene being photographed. You no need to adjust the settings to capture a 3D image as when using the 3D two-shot function, the camera shifts to take the second shot after taking the first shot, and saves a single 3D image in the camera automatically.
Also you can turn this 3D digital camera into a 2D one by hitting the 3D/2D switch button available on either sides of the camera. It is possible to transfer your 3D images to other devices such as SD/SDHC cards, Real 3D camera, and also to your computer via USB or high speed infrared communication.
The 3D digital camera will be available from September 2009 and you can get the camera at just $600.
MiFi is a card-like wireless broadband device that creates a personal cloud of high-speed internet connectivity that can be shared among up to five users and a variety of WiFi-enabled devices like laptops, MP3 players and gaming devices. It is both a wireless hotspot and broadband modem.
“You can hold the MiFi 2200 in the palm of your hand, slip it in your pocket, even place it on a beach towel if you’re lying under the sun and wirelessly connect your laptop, MP3 player and gaming device to the Internet all at once,” said Steve Elfman, president of network, wholesale and product, Sprint. “Now customers will be able to use one mobile broadband device – the MiFi 2200 – to connect multiple personal devices or multiple users. If I have a WiFi-enabled device, I don’t need to find a WiFi hotspot. The MiFi 2200 creates one for me.”
Now, with Sprint you can access the internet in a tea shop, sea shore or where ever you want and share the connectivity among your friends.
Web filtering software is must for all PCs in China
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has ordered that Web filtering software called ‘Green Dam Youth Escort’ must be installed on all Personal computers made in China or imported from abroad as of July 1. Also it asks PC makers to provide monthly sales figures, installation figures and comments to the Ministry for the remainder of the year. From 2010, reports can be submitted annually rather than monthly.
According to The Wall Street Journal:
The software was developed by Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co., with input from Beijing Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy Co.
Bryan Zhang, founder of Jinhui, said Green Dam operates similarly to software designed outside China to let parents block access to Web content inappropriate for children. Some computers sold in China already come with parental-control software, but it isn’t government-mandated.
Mr. Zhang said his company compiles and maintains the list of blocked sites, which he says is limited to pornography sites. He said the software would allow the blocking of other types of content, as well as the collection of private user data, but that Jinhui would have no reason to do so. He also said the software can be turned off or uninstalled.
Graham Hawkes maker of Deep Flight Super Falcon, explains it as “This one, instead of being a crab you drop to the bottom, is like a dolphin. It will fly off and move through the ocean with grace. It looks like a big animal moving and can do barrel rolls with whales,”
He calls it as “the most beautiful machine ever built” in the launching event of Falcon at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Already he had sold a Super Falcon to Mr. Tom Perkins who made his fortune as a venture capitalist backing companies like Google, Symantec and Genentech.
Mr. Perkins commented on Falcon as “I believe the Super Falcon is the future for underwater adventuring.”
The main principle behind Falcon is use of downward lift on the wings to fly down to depth. It is the first aqua machine to operate on the same principles as flight. One more advantage of Falcon is the reduction of the internal volume of the pressure hull.
Falcon is powered by a set of Lithium polymer batteries. The cabin pressure is maintained at one atmosphere, hence there is no issue with crew or passengers suffering from the so-called bends or their pressure related illness.
The next mission of Mr Hawkes is to turn Super Falcon into an “ambassador of the seas.”
Mathematica inventor Stephen Wolfram is ready to launch a computational engine ‘Wolfram Alpha’ on this Friday. It has created a great buzz among net surfers even before its launch. Most of them have visualized Alpha as ‘Google Killer’. But it is not like Google which returns documents according to search query, instead Alpha computes the answers to a wide range of questions.
Alpha uses built-in models of fields of knowledge to compute the answers to questions. For instance, if you type in “San Francisco to Tokyo”, it will fetch you data on how many miles apart they are, the projected flight path, and current local times. It sounds very interesting to watch the Alpha results as it displays graphs, images and other data related to the questions.
Are you eagerly for its launch? You can also view its launch live on Justin.tv. The company will be live broadcasting its launch starting at 8pm ET using video streaming service Justin.tv.
The dream of controlling TV channels with thoughts will soon come true. Not only TV channels, you can control light switches, door and any households in a smart home through thoughts. No more hassle of lost keys and remotes, thanks to brain-computer interface (BCI) technology which was being developed in Europe. BCI technology lets users perform everyday tasks with thoughts alone.
“The BCI lets people turn on lights, change channels on the TV or open doors just by thinking about it,” explains Christoph Guger, the CEO of Austrian medical engineering company g.tec that developed the application.
g.tec has teamed up with a group of international universities and research institutes as part of the EU-funded Presenccia project to incorporate its BCI technology into virtual environments. “A virtual environment could be used to train a disabled person to control an electric wheelchair through a brain-computer interface,” explains Mel Slater, the coordinator of the Presenccia project. “It is much safer for them to learn in Virtual reality than in the real world, where mistakes could have physical consequences.”
This project could offer liberating possibilities for disabled people. The BCI technology will gain ground in medical applications for the disabled and for rehabilitation. The g.tec CEO says that g.tec’s smart home application will soon be deployed in a real smart home.
EMC corporation announces a high end Symmetrix storage array x86. It is integrated with VMware’s API to automate the provisioning of storage for virtual machines across multiple tiers of disk drives, from solid-state to SATA and x86 quad-core processors.
The V-Max array offers three times the performance of the current Symmentrix DMX4 array, while scaling to 2 petabytes of usable capacity within a single chassis.
Barb Robidoux, vice president of storage product marketing EMC said “This is the most significant change to the Symmetrix architecture since we introduced it 18 years ago,” and “This is purpose-built for virtual data centers, You can think of this as the infrastructure for the private cloud. This is about your critical transactional business-critical applications”.
EMC said that its use of VMware’s hypervisor enables the system to scale up to hundreds of thousands of terabytes of storage and tens of millions of I/O operations per second supporting hundreds of thousands of VMware, not only can the Symmetrix V-Max virtualize disk storage within the array, but it can also cobble together multiple chassis and manage them as if from a single pool of storage. The array can automate the provisioning of data across solid-state disks, Fibre Channel and Serial ATA drives within a single frame.
Benjamin Woo vice president of research firm IDC’s enterprise storage systems research group said that “You want to allocate storage, server and network resources in an any-to-any type of environment, and that’s what the V-Max is designed to do. In the future, you’ll be able to make multiple Symmetrixes look like one”.
Canadian researchers have developed the world’s first flying micro-robot. That can manipulate objects; particularly it will be helpful for micro-scale application during surgeries, micro assembly of mechanical components and handling of biological samples.
The research and developed team Waterloo University said- “The invention provides researchers with more control over micro-scale manipulation, allowing them to move and place tiny objects with far greater precision” and “it moves around and manipulates objects with magnets attached to micro-grippers, remotely controlled by a laser-focusing beam”.
Behrad Khamesee, Research leader and professor of mechanical and mechatronics engineering, who is skilled in developing micro-scale devices using magnetic levitation said – We have developed a magnetically levitated micro-robot, which is a new technology for manipulation using flying micro-robots.
The mechanism controls that magnetic field by using feedback from position sensors in order to position the micro-robot. Since the power is supplied externally, the micro-robot can be manoeuvred. The new flying Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) the device defies the force of gravity by flying or levitating, powered by a magnetic field.
