The University of Toronto – Canada revealed that more than 1200 computers in over 100 countries were affected. The system called “GhostNet” has hacked computers in embassies, foreign ministries, government departments and offices in several cities belonging to the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan government-in-exile, the Canadian team said.
Initially, the Dalai Lama’s office approached the Munk Centre for an International Studies to investigate allegations of Chinese espionage. After 10 months of study, they found that a far larger spy network is targeting more than 1295 infected computer in 103 countries.
The researchers said that the main focus of the system is on government of south and south-east Asian countries. The Ghostnet system is still alive with a wide-ranging set of tools through which hackers can retrieve documents, and turn on web cameras and audio system, from remote place.
“One of the characteristics of cyber-attacks of the sort we document here is the ease by which attribution can be obscured,” Deibert, director of Munk’s Citizen Lab
One of the major problems faced by students is spending $$$ for text book. During this financial crisis, everyone is trying to minimize their expenses. But in education, this is not possible. Every year the cost of the books is rising.
Flatworld has come out with a revolutionary idea to create and publish college textbooks at free of cost. It also planned to offer audio book versions, study guides, web quizzes and digital flash cards for a fee. Students and teachers can take a print of a text book in whole or part at a fraction of the cost.
Good news for graduates
Futurist Ray Kurzweil leads a new school called Singularity University that will explore a time when computers are more intelligent than people. The university will be sited at Nasa’s Ames Research Centre in Silicon Valley, close to Google’s headquarters.
The idea of Singularity University is to assemble graduates from 10 different fields including biotechnology, finance, entrepreneurship, networks, computer system, etc, and offer courses on biotechnology, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. And to make students look at the same set of problems from different angles.
“The magic of breakthroughs occurs when you have nontraditional thinking around a problem that is stuck,” another founder of University Diamandis said. “It’s when a mathematician works on a biological problem, for example.”The size of future classes will expand to 120 students. Tuition is set at $25,000.
Google has become a sponsor of Singularity University.
