Google Internet bus in Tamil Nadu Wednesday, February 4, 2009

As a result of the Google internet bus project, Google has designed a mobile bus which mainly focuses to create awareness of internet among offline population in the local language. The people who are not having knowledge about internet, Google, Gmail, Google map are mainly targeted.

The mobile bus showcases the features of basic internet; initially they have planned to cover four themes namely education, information, communication and entertainment for the first phase. They started this mobile bus from Chennai and it will cover various cities in Tamil Nadu over the next month and a half.

Google is about to introduce an offline email service soon; Google Gear’s built-in is used for offline email service. “Gear’s for Firefox 3, as of today, is available for all users,” said Aaron Boodman. Gears is an open source project, the system requirement for Google Gears is Windows XP/Vista,  Firefox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 6.0+ it’s also available for Windows, Windows Mobile, Mac (Firefox, Safari), Linux and Android.
Google said “the company described several Gears features under development–though not promised–for Gears” in May. Offline access to web application is the initial features in Google Gears.
Yahoo is also working on a similar project called BrowserPlus to improve Web browsers.
How to use this offline service
•    Go to the Labs tab within the Gmail settings
•    Click the Enable radio button given against the Offline option
•    Update the changes by clicking the Save the changes button.
•    Go back to the inbox and click the Offline 0.1 option in the upper right corner near the settings link.
•    Next comes the explanation of what you’re doing and the warning not to install offline Gears on a public machine.
•    Click The Next button to get access to the permission phase for granting Gmail access to Gears.
•    In next page, create a shortcut for Gmail Offline on your computer if required.
•    On click of the Ok button, the system will start the synchronization process to download the messages to the local system.
•    Get access to the control panel to know how far back Gmail’s offline archive goes
